A hopeful girl dreams of becoming an astronaut, going to space and working on the Space Station. One day, her family helps her build a ship to reach the cosmos, but once she’s up there, she realizes just how far from home she really is. Alone in the void of space, she wonders if her risky trip was really worth it.
The conflict of this story was based on the following line from Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale, The Little Mermaid:
“’Think about it carefully,’ said the witch. ‘Once you take on the form of a human, you can never again be a mermaid. You’ll never be able to swim back through the water to your sisters or to your father’s palace...’“
I also took inspiration from the story of Laika, the Russian canine who was sent alone into space and never returned to Earth.
